This book gives an account of the characteristics of a class of learned men who over the centuries has managed to combine a broad range of expertise – knowledge of the law, philosophical thought, scientific awareness, literary inventiveness, historical research – so that they can become (in times of emancipation) the main custodians of rite, education, protection and expression of the Tradition. A fascinating (albeit non-linear) story which is essential for the understanding of the happenings over thousands of years of one of the great monotheistic religions.
